Which ATV Tires are Right for You?

Jun. 14 2019 Miscellaneous By ___

ATVs are incredible vehicles able to take on a wide range of terrain. But not all tires are well-suited for all types of terrain. Many powersports vehicle owners stock up on a variety of tires so that they can have a more fun (and safer) time out on various terrain styles. We've rounded up some of the most important styles below. If you have any questions or want to look at ATVs for sale, visit Lawton Motorsports. Our dealership is in Lawton, Oklahoma and we proudly serve those in Edmond, Oklahoma as well as Wichita Falls, Texas.

All Terrain

Odds are, your ATV is currently operating with all terrain models. These are designed to be a general, all purpose option. They usually aren't tailored heavily for a specific style of ground. You will find some difference among the styles, though, in terms of being better suited for certain turf styles. For example, you may find an all terrain model that offers extra features to better tackle muddy conditions. But even with some extra features, this style will still be able to handle other situations (such as rocky riding). These standard tires should be in every powersports owner's garage. They'll allow you to handle a wide range of situations.

Sand Tires

As their name implies, sand tires are well-suited for sand. They utilize a unique design with paddle type ridges (it's why they are also commonly called paddle tires). This design helps them be well suited for sand, which can be challenging due to how easily it moves underthe weight of a vehicle. The paddle design pushes the sand backwards, giving you the traction you need. It's not all that different from how a steam boat pushes through the water.

One thing to note is that the ridges don't work well if the terrain isn't as soft as sand. If you head out on harder ground, it can actually damage the tire and make it useless on the sand.

Mud Tires

These models give you the ideal traction in conditions that are muddy or watery. They utilize a design with oversized knobs. This allows them to grab big swaths of terrain deeply and give you necessary traction. Muddy trails pose a unique challenge since they tend to lack a uniform texture. Some spots are firm, others are watery. Mud tires allow you to traverse that variety of terrains with ease.

These ATV tires also work well in snowy or slushy conditions. Their well defined lugs lend themselves well to even weight distribution. You'll find that they are better in these conditions than an all terrain tire. If you see yourself heading out on muddy, snowy, or slushy conditions, you'll want to stock up with these tires.

Keep in mind that ATV mud tires aren't well suited for tough, sturdy ground. If you try taking them on firm turf, you can end up damaging them or even destroying them. Keep them on the grounds they are intended for and you'll enjoy a great time.
